HELP!!!! 2000 740 M62 engine & 2000 X5 M62 engine difference

installing a 2000 740 engine on a 2000 x5 4.4 ..

the bottom part of the 2000 x5 m62 engine has a part attached to the oil pan for front axles of the x5.... the 2000 740 m62 engine does not have it because its not 4x4///

the x5 engines is bad and the 740 engine is good... so the plan is to put the 740 engine on the x5...

so heres my question can i take all the part of the bad x5 engine and put it in the good 740 engine? (so in other words- can i drop the oil pan with all attched parts and will it fit on the 740?)

i'm would imagine that the majority of the engine is the same. what you come up with so far? check the real OEM site and see if the gaskets are the same part numbers and such. if so the i would imagine that swapping the oil pan and what not would go relatively smoothly.

From what I can see, you should be able to swap over the oil pan and windage tray etc. The short block is the same, but I believe it may have different cams... not fully sure and can't cross-reference the part #s at this time.

If all you need is the block/crank/rods/pistons, etc. than you should be able to swap over all the peripherals from one engine to the other. (heads, manifold, etc.)

Should I ask what happened to the engine of the X5?

the x5 engine's chain slips and locked engine.. now i bought a 2000 740 engine and from the oil pan down the 740 is so much plain then the old x5 bad engine. the x5 engine has like an extra pan and something for an axle. (i believe all that stuff attached to the boil pan is for the 4x4 or front axles )

so here my $$ question can i take the oil pan off and all the things attched to it from the bad x5 engine and put it on the 740 engine with out any issues?

Is the engine wiring for the x5 and 740 the same?

the never ending x5 & 740 nightmare!

damn - just curious, what mileage did your chain slip at? Did you have any warning? It happened to my 99 540i (same engine) at 103k miles and had been preceded by a P0011 code I believe

My chain jumped teeth on the cams due to a improperly installed guide after the previous owners shop removed the heads and reinstalled the guides w/o torqueing them down. Honestly, you're really better off calling a shop like www.bavengine.com or www.metricmechanic.com as both have been rebuilding all types of BMW engines for years. From what I've found over the years, the M62TU is the same motor across the board, regardless of where it's installed...so if you've got both engine out and side by side, just make sure that your to-be-installed 740 engine has the necessary X5 bits on it. Im not sure how long you plan on keeping the car, but I assume for a while since you're replacing the motor. Do the waterpump, valve cover and valley pan gaskets, and the oil seperator valve since they're going to be super easy to do at the moment. If you're looking for an affordable 10-15+ horsepower mod, hit the junkyard again and grab a pre-vanos intake manifold from any 3.5-4.4 530, 540, 740, 840 V8 up to 1998. It has larger internal passage, so it flows more air, then get the matching $$Dinan$$ software to optimize it.
