Unhappy flooded rear passenger floorboard!!

Ugh! I just picked the truck up Saturday, CPO these nuts!!

I went through the vehicle and didnt find any obvious issues at delivery, however now two days later after setting down a paper bag for a few minutes on the rear passenger floor I discovered massive amounts of water on both sides!! I saw it was damp when I inspected at delivery but I thought it was maybe from the detailing or something. Never did it dawn on me there could be a leak. Since when do BMW's leak!!?? I've had three so far, and never had any issues. Besides the leak everything else seems to be thumbs-up.

Well, a day late, I did the research and discovered some of the concerns to look for when inspecting, i.e. this type of leak. The front driver and passenger floorboards, as well as the entire cargo area (including the wells) are dry as a bone. After searching the forum I discovered that it leak could be either a) a clogged moonroof drain or b) a leak from the door vapor barriers.

So i fished some trimmer line through all the drains in the moon roof, they are all clear except the front driver side. It is clogged!! I tried fishing from top and bottom, with no success at unblocking it. The passenger side drain i was easily able to fish the line from the top all the way out the bottom of the car. I tested all three drains, and all quickly drained without issues. Could a clogged front moon roof drain be causing all this water in the rear?? There are zero signs of any water damage in the front, everything is perfectly dry.

In the rear, I know the left door seal was replaced. From research on the forum the amount of water that is in both on sides of the rear passenger floorboard appears to be one of these vapor barrier issues. I have not taken apart the door panels to investigate yet.

Could there be any other possibility for all this water?? Please note, it has been raining here in NJ like no tomorrow.

Ive only had the car two days, how should I handle this with the dealer? Demand repairs, or just fight for a new vehicle alltogether?

I love the truck, this sucks!!

All you should need to do is bring it in to your service adviser at the dealer and show them how the carpet is wet. They should have absolutely no problem fixing it for you, especially since you bought the vehicle only a couple days ago. Hopefully they can afford you a loaner as they may have to remove the carpets for drying. (down here in hurricane alley I get my share of flood cars and wet carpets)

If you point out to the adviser that corner of the sunroof that isn't draining properly then point out the rear carpets wet it should get the point out that there may be more than one leak so they should thoroughly water test the complete vehicle before calling it done as well.

Ah, don't sweat it. Stuff happens. If the Stealership is willing to fully take care of it, all will be good in no time. Just make sure that on the invoice it's SUPER WELL documented in case of any future problems that may arise. You can always pull out this invoice and wave it in their face. Documentation is key.

Yeah - thats a bummer, but don't sweat it too much - I had pretty much the same thing happen. Water can come from sunroof, as you know, or occasionally the vapor barrier in a door can come loose and allow water in. My dealer took the car in, replaced the sunroof cassette completely, replaced all the carpeting in the car, and I haven't had a problem since. If you have a decent dealer, they'll take care of it.

For my case, the leaks came thru the vapor barriers in the door. I could not believe how much water could get in if I didn't see it myself!

The fix was easy, but drying the carpets was the hardest part.

so i dropped the vehicle off yesterday at the dealer, but before doing so i was able to unclog the one clogged left front sun roof drain. I then checked all the drains again with water to verify they were draining properly.

today i was contacted by the dealer and they stated they discovered a leak in a seal in the rear of the sunroof. they said that were unable to detect any leak when they ran the car through the car wash, however with a stronger stream of water they discovered this leak. I asked about water possibly coming through the rear doors, and they mentioned that there were vapor barriers in the doors which could cause leaking, however they were also unable to detect any water coming from the doors.

does this sound normal to anyone? all the reading i have done on the board regarding this issue, never have i read about any seals failing in the rear of the sunroof to cause such a great amount of water leakage...

kishg, the vehicle is still in warranty till next year. so its covered. the rains here in NJ have been unbelievable.

ok so i checked last night, i don't think it's vapor barriers in this case. seems like the leak is from the rear a/c ducting.. wierd that it could be condensing that much water! it's going to the dealer tomorrow.

Where is the water coming in? If it is under the front corner of the dash it is most likely the front sunroof drains.
