Parking lot hit and run!! SOB's!!

So me and the family were at an Amish Market yesterday buying a shed. Parked the car away from all of the others. When we returned my 10-yr-old son immediately noticed a dent and scratch on the driver side rear door. Looks as though someone REALLY misread their turn into the parking spot. Needless to say, the three spots on either side of the car were empty, so I'm a little miffed why anyone tried to park there anyway. I haven't been that pissed in a LONG time. As a police officer, I once (off-duty)witnessed someone hit a car while parking, then relocate to another spot in the lot. I followed him into the store, provided the victim vehicle tag to management, and then stopped the culprit with assistance from management. I wish someone would have returned the favor!!!

Anyway, the dent is right at the wheelwell, about the size of a baseball. The scratch seems to be to the clearcoat. Will I need to repaint the entire side, or just the door? And, how much is the dealership going to charge to do it? Is the price different at different dealerships? I have a metallic black 2006. I did not make police report because I know if I go through insurance I can fill one out later. My deductible is $500, hoping that I don't need to make a claim and the cost is less than that......

Thanks for reading!!!

Can you post some pics of the dent so we can tell you if we think it is fixable by a good dent wizard? I got a big dent in my X back several years. Same as you I came back from shopping at a mall and found my car had been dented while parked. Although it was a in difficult area to fix (see pic below) a dent wizard made it disappear totally.
Here are the posts:
Dent: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-got-dent.html
and dented fixed: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ent-fixed.html
Good luck with yours

I'll get pics later, car is out now. I actually saw your post yesterday when I searched for similar situations. Difference is that my dent has a deep scratch in the middle. I used a dent wizard in the past for a dent in the same exact spot as yours, worked perfectly. But, there was no scratch involved then....

Sorry to read of that carelessness...esp. when the idiot doesn't even leave
a card with their info for you.

The few BMW dlrs I've wandered through didn't have a body shop; they
farmed that work out. If a dent doc can't fix it, (worth a try, imo), then
any "good" body shop should be able to handle it. Maybe call your local
dlr(s) and ask them who they use?

Sorry to hear about the a s s hole that hit your car. I am an insurance agent in MD/VA/DE an I get a few of these calls every week. This would be filed as a hit and run and should go on uninsured motorist cov. I am not sure about NJ but in MD we have a $250 ded on it. I still do not advise anyone to file small claims unless they are comprehensive claims.

As far as the bodyshop I would call around ask the dealer and ask your insurance agent too. Even though you are not going to file a claim it wouldn't hurt to see who they would reccomend using.

It is a shame you didn't see them do it. I hate parking lots, we don't take my x5 as much as the baby mobile the "Lexus" but man people just don't care anymore.

By the way those Amish can sure build some nice buildings.

Most body shops will use body filler...OK if done properly but on a black X you will probably see the repair area.

If you intend to keep your X5 use a Wizzard to fix the dent and then have a body shop repair the scratch.
