thats your oilseperator. it needs to be replaced along with your valve cover gaskets if you see them leaking. check your oil level to make sure your not too low

Level is always the same, never changed. I replaced oil separator year ago with all hoses.

Coolant is also good. No change in coolant level.

i have the same problem... my indy shop pin pointed it was the valve cover gaskets! i have yet to get it changed though... i have a similar post here...http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-e53-forum/62934-updated-strong-smoke-smell.html that you can follow

My guess is the valve cover gasket is bad. I just had this type of problem with my 2004 3.0. Turned out to be a leaking valve cover gasket.
