I promise that on my '01, Aug. '01 build, if I press the center button on
key, it locks all the doors, tailgate, etc. But, it is not alarmed...

If I hit that button a 2nd time, in quick succession, it arms the alarm.
That is how the sales guy told me, way back in Sept '01, and that is
how mine works.
Maybe it's jes'me?!

try rolling down the window, hit the arm button twice, and wait 30 seconds, and then reach in and hit the central locking button, and pull the inside door handle twice to open the door, see if the alarm goes off.

Don't get your point; that's what how I described arming my alarm...
the OP's wonderment was how to lock without arming alarm, which I
described.

Mine works as I described and, as you repeated.

Hmmm,
My 2001 arms on the first push for sure.

I just picked it up a couple of weeks ago, and on the way home stopped to pick up some beer. My 11yr old son was still in the car, I got out and pressed the key button once to lock the doors.

While in line getting beer I heard an alarm going off... A quick peek out the door saw my poor son sitting in the X5 with the alarm going! He hadn't opened the door, so it was the motion sensor that triggered the alarm.

This is also the way the owners manual states it will work.

All the best,
Brian

My 2004 works the same way...Push the roundel button once to lock and arm the alarm. Push twice to disable the interior sensor as described in the aforementioned owner's manual. This also applies locking the car via the keyhole. Therefore, the alarm will always armed with locking the car. So, I'm still not sure how one can lock the door without arming the alarm other than having the dealer do a re-program, which my dealer is still claiming that it cannot be done (re-program to lock the car via keyhole without arming the alarm).

some people are claiming locking the car with the remote twice disables the alarm completely
