X performes better with MAF disconnected
Anyway, today I decided to disconnect the MAF as a test and the car ran really good and was much more responsive. No more hesitation at any RPM. Not sure I can conclude that the MAF is bad but I guess replacing the MAF will be my next move. Any suggestion is welcome. Last edited by alpac; 09-06-2009 at 09:50 PM. |

Your MAF is giving bad information to the computer, hence why it runs badly w/ it plugged in. When you unplug the MAF, it'll hiccup for a second then run off base maps that are learned over time. You can read the codes all you want, but DO NOT have the codes reset until after you replace the MAF or else your computer will have essentially nothing to work w/ and run even worse that it is currently w/ the bad MAF. Cleaning the MAF is kind of a bandaid fix, so i'd start shoping online asap. I've seen them on ebay, Auto Parts at AutohausAZ - OEM Auto Parts - Discount Replacement Parts, Resources and Car Care Tips. If you're feeling adventurous, search on m5board.com for being able to spend around $80 for a VW MAF...I don't remember the part number, otherwise i'd be able to tell you what to get.

You can use a Bosch Land Rover MAF (Google Search Part #: B3130-139283). Identical to the BMW version, just less cash out of your pocket.

Replaced both O2 sensors and the MAF today and cleared the codes and what a difference
It is like having a new truck again. It has been some time since the X has performed that well. I almost forgot how responsive my 4.4 X5 is when tuned properly. I drove 100 miles and the error codes have not came back yet |

Where did you order them? Original or aftermarket?

which o2 sensors, pre cat or post cat, since there are 4 total.

It would be the pre-cat sensors. The post cat sensors only monitor the performance of the cat converters, the pre cat sensors monitor fuel trim.

I changed the 2 pre-cat sensors. I got the MAF for $68 from there eBay Store - PGpartsale: MAF Meters Sensors, Door Handles, Mirror Covers and the O2 sensors for $89 each from there
OEM O2 Sensor BMW 525 740 X3 Z3 X5 Z4 M5 Z8 330 325 328:eBay Motors (item 370219637559 end time Sep-21-09 12:46:52 PDT) I drove another 80miles (so 180miles since I did the change) and still no code back. My fuel consumption is about 2 to 3 mpg better than it was. Changing the MAF sensor is really a 5mns job and the O2 sensors were really easy too. Unlike on some other cars the O2 sensors on the X5 are pretty easy to access once the car is jacked up and can be removed with a flat 22mm (or 7/8") open-end wrench. An O2 sensor socket would not work as there is no space to fit the socket. |
