Heated Steering Wheel question

A friend wanted to see how the heated steering wheel worked, but it did not turn on. Checked #29 fuse and it was good. Searched the forums but not much on troubleshooting. Any ideas for next step?

I just tried the same thing for the first time on my new '06. It also did not come on with the seat heater. I assume that's how it's supposed to activate but I'm not sure. I have not RTFM yet.

if you have a heated steering wheel, there is a button next to the cruise on/off button with heat squiggles coming off of it on the steering wheel that turns it on; it's totally independent of the heated seats

The engine must be running; on my X3 if you try it with the ignition on but no motor running, it pretty much doesn't work.

Do you have CPO? If you live in Montclair take a quick ride over to BMW of Bloomfield, i'm sure they can work it out for you.
