if you have that much cash to burn, then why not change the rotors/pads with the oil? if we are assuming that BMW specs mean little to nothing and cost is not a factor, then that makes perfect sense from a cost doesn't matter point of view.

then again, if you really wanted to spread fear, you could tell the op to buy a new car every couple of years. that would match the cost doesn't matter argument perfectly since it is the most expensive thing to do!

then again, you would be in E70 forum and not the E53 one. clearly cost matters to you, so match your advice with your actions...
Um...ok.

I am not trying to spead fear or anything like that. I am simply saying that BMW rotors are known to be thin from the get-go. The OP's car is 5 going on 6 years old. Knowing that the rear pads need to be replaced at this age, I was just giving the advice to replace the rotors as well while he is doing the pads. BMW is as well... Also, rear brakes typically last much longer than the fronts, so unless there are other issues with the brakes than just typical wear, I would guess that the OP's car has 50-60K plus on the clock. At that mileage/age they are most likely original to the car. That is just a hunch. I was also just letting the OP know that most times, rotors are repalced with the pads on BMW's, so he knows he wasn't just automaticlally getting ripped off by the dealer suggesting to do so.

I care about cost and personally don't feel that replacing rotors with pads is overkill. If you want to save every dime, why not just tell the OP to keep driving around with the check brake lining light on? That will save him from having to buy brakes for a few weeks.

Like I said, to each his own.

FinT, are the rear rotors original to the car? How many miles on your 04 4.8is?

I'm with FSETH on this one, many people do not take care/maintain their automobiles properly.

Seriously, even if they are still in spec now, I doubt they would be in spec for the duration of the new pads life. To each his own though.
