SES mass air flow sensor help plz

ok this morning on my way to work, the freeway was empty.. going along with a trailblazer SS on the lane next to me.. it was my turn to speed a lil to take the exist coming ahead to head to work.. that punk wont let me go in front of him.. so i put this baby on sport mode and gunned it which he couldnt catch up to me at that point... but the time i get to the exist i looked how fast i was goin thn i releaized i was doing 120 on 65 so i slowed down and drove safly to work.. put when i stoped at a read light, the SES ( service engine soon) light came on.. i didnt sweat it, i said ill check it out when i get off work...on my way home i stoped at auto zone to get it checked out for free.. they told me its the mass air flow sensor.. but i havent noticed anything different on my truck starting it or shutting it off or driving.. could it be true, or there readers are different thn the dealers... so they want $285 for some after market MAF.. should i be concerned about changing it ASAP.. is it gonna cause any more problems to my baby X.. am gonna call the dealer 2mero and see how much it cost.. until then can u guys give me some feedbacks plz.. can it be cleaned or it has to be changed ASAP & wats the cause.. and if u guys know where i can get it cheaper too..
i would really appericate it.

What code did autozone pull out?
If the MAF is faulty it is very easy to change, 10mns job. You can find good aftermarket one's on ebay for about $70.

I got mine for 88 USD at this adress: www.pgautosale.com
I'd wait some more time though and clear the codes, just to check that the code will light again or not, seems strange that the MAF fails so suddenly.

I doubt the MAF has just suddenly failed after a high speed run. It's more than likely an oxygen sensor than a MAF. Get the P code from autozone and go to an indi or BMW to get the BMW code. Make sure they match before you start replacing parts. Troubleshooting an air/fuel mixture prob (which is usually where the MAF comes into play) is not as clear cut as just getting the code and replacing it. Start by cleaning the MAF. You can get the cleaner at AutoZone too. CRC Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner. Gray can. Just pull the MAF out and spray it down heavily. Let it air-dry for about 15 mins and then reinstall.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
Trust me on this, the guys at autozone are NOT mechanics and only read the code, which had the word MAF in there so they said that's the problem. Like if they see a O2 sensor, lean mixture code they sell you an O2 sensor not realizing that it's just fine and there is a vacuum leak...

Go back and get the codes read again, but get the P-codes. Then have it cleared as it may be just a one time fault...

Trust me, he let you pass. I ran one of these on the freeway going up a hill and we were side by side to 120.

Weasel--could it be the Mass Air Flow is starting to get dirty or going bad ? And if it gets worse the car will start stalling, correct ? I believe that's what my experience was with it but it's been a few years that it's happened to me.
