Oxygen Sensor

Hi all,

anybody replaced the oxgen sensors? If so, pls, share your inputs with us. thanks!

I believe there are 2 in the front and another 2 in the rear. Just found out they cost $250 each for BMW genuine parts. hahahaha

nope. mine just past 100K miles and still running well. Also just passed CA smog with flying colors, so I think mine are good. I would bet you can get the Bosch equivalents from an auto parts store for right around 50% of the dealership price for the BMW part. which is likely just a re-labeled Bosch unit anyway.

Juppalgae,

Did you get anymore hits on this? As need to change my O2 sensor as well. It is the front right side tht needs to be replace but I'm thinking replace both of the front O2 sensor. My car is close to 120K miles. The front 02 sensor is relatively cheap. Changing the O2 sensor shouldn't be that difficult. I'm surprise that no one have a write up for this. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

From what i've read on-line here, you should change the front (pre-cat) ones. You can buy bosch parts from an on-line retailer for about $75 a piece.

Also, there i apparently no difference in performance if you change out the two post cat (rear) ones. So I wouldn't bother with them unless you throw a code for it. They run over $90 each. Not sure why they cost more, but they do.

Try Bavarian Auto or BMA Auto parts.

Thanks Man!!
Yeah I'm going to have the two front ones changed out. The code is for the front right but I might as well change the front left while we are doing the right O2 sensor. The OEM Bosch is about 60.00 while the rears are more. I think maybe because the rear ones are longer with the cable wire and that may be why they are more expensive. Did you replace yours on your own? the local shop (non dealership) will charge me 432.00 to change out both. That might be a good deal becuase the dealership quoted me 469.00 just to do one O2 sensor replacement.

I had my indy do it when he was doing some other work on the truck and it was already on the hoist. It's only a 10 minute job so $432 still seems excessive. Even if you paid him 30 minutes to do it, that's only $50 in labour, right? Plus $150 for the parts... Really, all they do is unplug the sensor, then wrench it off, then wrench on the new one and plug it in. Then do it again for the second sensor...

You should be able to havae it done for $200 in total. OR, you could you buy the special tool that you need to this (it has a slot for the wire) and then do it yourself. I just dont' have garage (live in a condo) so can't really do that. Then it would be only parts.

you're right though, do both at the same time. No point in waiting for the other one to crap out, it's only a matter of time before it does.

BMW recommends new sensors routinely at 100k but my indy advised against it -- said they can last much, much longer than that and there's no advantage in replacing them now (I am at 100k). Since he was basically arguing against his own interests, I figured he must be telling the truth ---

BTW, i was charged .8 hours less 20% for installation of the o2 sensors. Which I had only paid $73 each for.

That's a total of $51 for labour and $146 for the parts. CDN dollars.
