i'm having the same problem but i have no first gear too. So when i have to leave a parking in the city i have to put it in reverse and open the door and push. ( PEOPLE START LAUGHING) I have to start from 2nd gear in tiptronic since i don't have 1st gear. i have about the same miles as you 81,500.

And you're out there buying angel eyes instead of getting this fixed? Honestly, people who allow maintenance to slide like this is why these cars get bad reputations and completely loose all their resale value...instead of fixing it right away, you keep driving it while the problem gets worse?! Where is the logic in that?

Some members on the Bimmerboard have suggested that changing the fluid (which I'm sure you probably haven't done) can fix a lot of issues w/ these transmission. See post below.

I've never seen this guys posts, but it's a common problem w/ a supposedly easy solution. I used this guy to order a $24 pump gear that got broken in my buddies 750iL. Jaggi is super helpful on the phone and might be able to assist in solving this problem, along w/ getting parts.

I found this w/ a quick Google search - 5hp24 no reverse - Google Search=

The 3 series share this same transmission, so you're not alone - BMW Reverse Transmission Problems

What is $30 angel eyes going to do to a $3000+ Tranny... i mean yes if i had $3000+ to spend on the tranny i would but i don't. If i had a 2nd car which i do (745LI) i would let the X rest untill it's ready to be driven again but there is no way in hell im parking the 745LI in the city

I've still got an idea in my head who the 7 belongs to, but anyways...IF it is in fact your 2nd car and you could afford to buy it in the 1st place, I don't see how fixing your current transmission isn't something you can afford before it gets worse.

As for parking, i'm sure there are way worse and way nicer cars that drive there everyday, so maybe you should consider NOT driving the X before you have to inconvenience someone else when the X finally breaks completely.

I've seen people w/ bumper stickers saying "I'd rather push my Chevy than drive a Ford." We'll have to get one for you that says "I'd rather push my X5 than drive my 745."

Thanks m5james,

Time to get a newer m5, e39 perhaps =) That is on my Christmas list at least.

Amcink,
$2000 sounds like a decent deal if you don't want to attempt it yourself. I was quoted $5500 from indies and $6500 from BMW.

I actually had an E39 M5 also, then got ride of it for the 740iL. I love the easy maintenance of the I6's. I almost got an X5 3.0/5 (planned to turbo) before the 7, but I found the 98 equipped the way I wanted it, so it was a done deal. I'm looking forward to ditching the auto in my 7 for a 6spd this winter, then i'll only have to worry about the X What did you use for fluid to soak the parts in anyways? You've mentioned using Esso fluids, so are you against the compatible fluids....Valvoline MaxLife, Castrol Import Multi vehicle and maybe even Redline D4? I've used the Castrol and Redline in other cars, have yet to try Valvoline.
