Transmission "no reverse" repair cost

I've been quoted between $2,000 and $2,500 for the repair of my transmission "no reverse" problem - 2001 4.4 (ZF5hp24) 1 year warranty parts and labor

What have you paid before?

Wonder if the shop can reveal what that involve?

Like rebuild tranny swap or getting solenoid/sensors inside the pan replace etc.
A friend got tranny swap by indie shop for around $6500, just FYI.

Just curious, how many miles?

I heard, don;t quote me on this one, that a tranny shop can do good job for less than a BMW indie shop. That's seems to what happened to my friend, the indie shop just ship his bad tranny as core and get a rebuild one put in; more cost to my friend.

Good luck.

That is an excellent deal. I had mine replaced at the dealer in July with only 70K. The original estimate from BMW with labor was 9k. BMW NA stepped up to the plate and covered the cost of parts, and I paid 2K labor. I had contacted a few indies and they quoted $3600 to rebuild.

How long have you owned your X5? I bought my 01 in 05 with 19K on the clock and CPO until September 2007. When my transmission went I had the service manager contact BMW NA for a good will repair and the covered the parts - if I didn't ask it would have been 9K

Hope this helps

IMO it would be silly to get only the F clutch replaced, anyway they are gonna open,so why wouldn't you want to replace friction materials with the new ones?
By the book it takes 7 hours just to remove and put the tranny back...imagine if you replace one thing and another is gonna fail in few months?
Just my 2c

Agreed. If you are going to keep it for a while, spend the extra money and completely rebuild it. It's sort of like changing a timing belt and not changing the water pump at the same time. The labor time is where you save.

Have you seem swisfrank's transmission repair in this forum is similar work and there is already a kit by ZF to replace other items (I think the list of itmes to replace is similar to swisfrank's list) .
I had the x5 for 1.5 year with original 68K miles on it.

I agree. Check out Swissfranks thread. It was very detailed and very inexpensive
