I have been following this thread and downloaded the installation instructions but still don't have a good feel for degree of difficulty. Are you guys planning to install yourself, take to dealer or indy?

Old thread but needs revival...

For my E39, I used Short Shifter Kit using E60 545i shifter, see the DIY below:

DIY: E39 Short Shifter Kit using E60 545i shifter - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

Has anyone tried the E60 545i shifter for the E53?

The consensus was that the stock E53 shifter is a fairly unique shape and no one I've read has tried other shifters on the E53.

I purchased the short, counterweighted and spherical bushing equipped UUC Evo3 SSK from UUC Motorwerks and love it, yes it is pricey but it was made for our application.

I have a stock shifter in my basement if you'd like a spare to do some testing with, the shift lever is the same on the 5 and 6 speeds.

RB, are you always connected to this site? Is it like a morphine drip for you, or something? That said, cn90, search for the other SSK thread, lots of detail since last November there about the new UUC product, along with Green Dragon's Utah hillbilly fabricated version .......

UUC Evo3 shifter is on my X5 (E53) as of a few months. It was worth the wait. I posted comments on installation (I did it myself), it took no more than an hour - it's fairly straightforward.

The E53 shifter (same part for 5 or 6 speeds) is indeed a rather unique shape - so UUC is the only option. Yes, you might fabricate something that could be workable, with all of the pride that comes with this, but consider your time and that outcome quality that you'll have with the "plug and play" product from UUC.

Re UUC: can someone link me to the least expensive website for pricing?
