Country driving, radiator protection.

I have noticed there is a heap of room between my grill and radiator for the possibility that something can sneak through and hurt my radiator whilst I am on a country road.

Please, does anyone have any tips and tricks to stop bugs/rocks/nasties getting through the grills and to the radiator?

Thanks

Dubs

Dude. Chill. To get to the radiator, it's going to have to go through the AC condenser, which is in front of the radiator. You'll have to hit a boulder at speed to go through both.

And that my dear friend, is extremely unlikely. Go drive it. It's a freaking car, after all.

Maybe I got the terminology wrong - my apologeez.

I rephrase....I have a concern that the big shiny metal thingy behind the grille might cop a pounding by rocks or some large nasty bugs on a country trip.

With a bike you would put a radiator guard over the front, normally made of some type of mesh.
Before doing this with my X5 i thought I'd ask the wider community if they already have something in place - no use reinventing the wheel I say.

Thanks anyways. I'll post a DIY when I make the 'shiny metal thing behind the grille' guard.

Mate I wouldn't worry too much. Obviously, there is a lot more protection around the radiator in the X5, than there is in a bike. It would have to be a bloody big rock to get through the grill and then into the radiator Unless you are driving up north, I haven't seen anything in and around Perth and the south west that would do that sort of damage. And even if it did, you would have to be really unlucky. Just stay clear of road trains.

Bugs are a different story. You could always rig some temporary mesh or flyscreen arrangement over the grill, but then you would have to make sure that it didn't get too blocked to restrict airflow into the radiator. But you would only need this at certain times of the year. I've only had one bad experience driving to Margaret River (my sister lives there so we drive down frequently) and that was several years ago. Bugs in the ventilation system. Took ages to get rid of the smell of rotting bugs. Fortunately wasn't the X.

And wildlife........well nothing is really going to stop a roo from doing damage other than a huge roo bar and I haven't seen anything like that on an X before.

If you (the OP) come up with something that does not block too much air, and is not visually objectionable, I'd be intereted.

I do nothing but country driving much of it on gravel/dirt roads and have no problems except lots of hard to remove bugs, lots of stone chips (some more like gouges) on the front bumper, a few flat tyres and some quickly deteriorating suspension components. No damage apart from that.

The only reason I am interested is the reminder if the one time a rock got my AC condensor on my RX7-TT. It cost a lot to repair. The BMW grill is very open and if a discrete screen can ad any protection for no real cost - why not.
