So what DOES CPO cover/

'04 4.4, 69,000 miles
At the dealer with several issues-
1- Squeeling noise in the steering when turning the wheel to the right. Found to be a bad contact ring in the steering column.... not covered

2- Front end clunk- right control arm.... not covered

3- The dreaded trans bang when not comimg to a complete stop- needs latest software update.... not covered

4- Rear end clunk- subframe bushings..... not covered

5- Torn CV boot- replaced the full joint under warranty (thanks killcrap!)

$1500 worth of repairs not covered by CPO. Every one of these would be covered by the Audi CPO, and all the suspension parts are identified as covered on our Explorer Ford Premium Care 6/100 CPO warranty. And it's not like these things aren't common on the E53 either.

Sorry for the rant but it seems like every time I go to the dealer it costs me $1000 for something not covered by CPO.

#'s 2 & 4 probably would not be covered under CPO as they are considered wear items. CPO is not as comprehensive as the original warranty and usually only covers major parts. I surprised the SA didn't try to help you more. Sometimes they can and sometimes they can't. A lot of it depends on how far they are willing to go to bat for you. There's a lot of grey area, but wear parts (ie: control arm bushings) aren't covered, eventhough they go out on almost EVERY BMW between 50k and 85k miles. The steering rack issue is something I would question. Different companies cover different items with their CPO warranties. Obviously we wouldn't trade our BMW's for an Audi or Ford because of a waranty....or I hope not!

I'll go along with #2 as a part that sees "wear and tear". But not covering a steering column part as wear and tear is crazy. And subframe bushings are wear and tear too? Not like they pivot up and down all day long.

No, not looking to go back to an Audi.... right now. They have their share of problems too, including control arms. But at least they cover the parts. And we already have an Eddie Bauer V8 AWD Explorer. Same age and mileage as the X5 and all we've done to it is change engine and trans fluid (yes trans fluid), rear brake pads and a set of tires. It's been absolutely trouble free from day 1 and reliable. No "susp inact", "trans failsafe", frozen door latches, leaking sunroof, control arm bushings. Nothing in 70K miles of driving. Oh, and it's quicker than my 4.4 X5, or so my wife is proud of telling people after an impromptu drag race one day.

Did the software update fix your transmission problem?

I totally agree. Unless the dealer thinks the tranny would fall under the "wear" category. Personally, I don't think the SA is helping the OP. Maybe he should try another dealership?

That may be the case. The dealer I've been using for the past two years is the dealer I bought the X5 from but is 30 miles away and a pain to get to. I decided to try this current dealer for the first time since they're just 15 min from my home and a sister store to the Audi dealer that always treated me well. This could be an example of not having a relationship with the dealer.

As for the trans flash, there have been times when I've been pulling my race car trailer that the trans has banged so violently that I'm afraid it's going to break the trans. When I have the trailer behind me, I have to always come to a complete stop even if it's a yield or a toll booth which doesn't make any friends with people behind me and is dangerous when stopping on a yield.

And I'm still trying to understand how a bad part in a steering column is wear and tear.
