High Pitched Whine at 65MPH Plus

I have an 06 X5 with a 3.0l and the wife tells me it has developed a whine at 65+MPH. She says it sounds like it is coming from the heater vents. It doesn't seem to matter what position the heater is in, full or partial air or heat. Anyone have any ideas before it goes to the dealer? And just so I don't get any speculation, she is not a whiner.

Our '01 has a kind of similar whine/whistle at speeds like that, and higher...
I only notice it on long road runs. It reminds me of valve train "noise", but
that is just a WAG. No problems, and still runs fine after 8+ yrs and 76K miles.

My whistle/whine is not 100% during these long trips; not intermittent but, not
constant, if that makes sense. I recall some other whine/whistle posts here.
I may do some digging as I don't recall a solution or resolve.

oddly enough, my moms 4.6 had the same problem. it ended up being the side view mirror not installed correctly

Is it throttle position related? I have one that whistles but only in a certain RPM range.

Sounds like your windshield rubber trim is coming undone (part number 51-31-7-182-004). It happened to me back in January and that's what it was. The sound actually feels like it's coming out of the vents......

Thanks for the ideas. We are taking it for a long trip today and I will have an opportunity to drive it and hear the noise. I will look at all the things you guys suggest and no the windshield has not been replaced. I'll have more specific details after today. TJCIN1

I drove the X5 for about 60miles with the wife in the passenger seat and no noise. So it was off to the dealer to find the cause of the noise and to repair a broken headrest. The dealer could not duplicate the noise, they did however replace the headrest for free. The wife swears there is a noise and I tend to believe her although I have not heard it yet. When I do, I'll post here for some more input.
