New custom Exhaust for Aussie 2004 3.0d

Hi all

I have fianally made the jump and booked myself in for a full custom exhaust on my Aussie diesel E53. The system is 3" turbo back, high flow cat, resonator, centre muffler then splits 2 2.5" outlet at end. I went on a test drive on the test car they had and it sounded amazing. It was like driving a V8 with little lag and also keeps going at high revs. At crusing, the exhaust was pretty quite but when u push it, it can really hear it turn into a beast.

I will post some more photos and video when it is finish.

Stay tuned....

Nice.Look forward to seeing the end result.
The 3.0" maybe a bit too much for the standard turbo and give you lag..

I have read through number of ur post regarding moding exhaust on our diesel engine. I wanted to go ur path of changing a 4.8/4.6l muffler but it was just too expensive to get one in Australia.

Regarding the turbo lag, the test vehicle I drove has less lag than my stock system with DPChip. I think they had also done alot of R&D changing the setting on the chip to get minimise of the lag which they will be complete re-programe to suit the exhaust during the installation.

Installation is booked tomorrow therefore should have the car back before end of week. Will also have dyno charts for the before and after exhaust to show how much power gain was obtained.

Have u chipped ur Powers1?

After 2 days at the workshop, i got mine car back before the weekend. 1st impression, the sound was quite good. If I drive it normally, it sound a bit louder than stock but if I rev it up a bit, the exhaust really open up. Acceleration feels smoother but I have to say, it doesn't feel much faster for some reason. Maybe im comparing it to my 330d.

I have attached the dyno graph. There is now 196hp at all 4 wheel so around a 30 hp increase from exhaust and re-tune. And I will find time to get some pictures up too.

Has anyone got any dyno figures for their car?

Its a shame that the Dyno graph doesnt show HP and Nms in relation to RPM!This way we could see where on the rev band the power differences are!

Do you know if they converted the wheel horsepower figures to flywheel.Looking at those HP figures,if they are at the wheels, then you had 230hp/580 Nms before and you now have 270hp/620 Nms at the flywheel, approx. This compared to the 218HP/474 Nms standard.
The Dyno figures below are for a re-map on a standard car,no hardware alterations.Done at Superchips UK.Figures are Flywheel,NOT wheel horsepower!
One has to be cautions when looking at power graphs issued by people that re-map cars for a living..

A simple dyno graph that shows power and torque against rpm is what we want.

I was looking at the graph before too and notice that they didn't have the power at different rpms. I ask if they can provide it for me.

This is what i think after driving it for a few days. The car does feel lighter than before. Lag is a bit better. More smoke then before obviously coz of high flow cat usually dont filter as good. The had the DPChip set at 9 which is the highest but I have just turned it down to 6-7 today to reduce the smoke a bit. See how it goes in the next few days.

Power wise... well, it sound faster But not sure if I can feel that it is faster. Didn't time myself properly before exhaust either so really hard to tell. But i suppose exhaust isn't really gonna make as much of a difference compared to a ECU flash or chip.

I'm now tempted to do a ECU flash for my car. My 2004 diesel was de-tune when it was first brought in to Australia coz aussie diesel quality was poor at the time. So i think the car will benefit quite a bit coz it is currently set at 150kw compare to 160kw plus u can usaually get quite a bit more our of ECU flash. Then, i probably dont have to turn the chip all the way up. Just a thought.

I am bit confused here! The power graphs you posted say that you have a custom exhaust and chip? You now say you an adjustable powerbox and thinking of getting an ECU remap»?
A powerbox will never work right with a custom exhaust! You need an ecu remap!
Can you also confirm if the HORSE POWER(HP) in then graphs are wheel HP or Flywheel?
First time I saw a dyno graph without RPM chart...and I have seen a few !

1. Sorry mate. I wasn't been clear before. The lower dyno chart is with factory exhaust with tunit Box (some of us call it chipping). The higher dyno chart reading is still with same Box (adjusted to higher setting which is 9) with custom exhaust. I dont have a ECU flash if that is what u r asking, just a box.

2. Yes the HP shown on the graph is hp at the wheel. Flywheel (BHP) would be higher.

3.Ask them again regarding if they have a dyno chart showing power at certain rpm but they don't have it I think the dyno machine they have probably cant link up with OBD or something. Who knows....

I had a chat with the guys at Evolve too. They don't recommend that I do a re-flash when i have already got a tunit chip. They say that it is risky and could do damage to car if not done right. They said that they believe that they ecu flash will be the more effective way of improving performance so it would be a better alternative compare to tunit box.

Maybe this tunit box is not the best option. Didn;t consider that much when i got it installed 3 years ago.
