Crash: Rear Ended by a Suzuki Swift

Ahhhh,
Don't you hate it when someone crashes into your much loved X5 ??

After reading several posts over the last year plus about accidents with members X's I've often thought how lucky I am that nobody has careered into 'Ol' Bluey'. Well, my luck just ran out.

The wife was stopped at one of those 'Turn Left At Any Time With Care' lanes, awaiting her turn when a young girl in a Suzuki Swift comes round the same corner behind her, thought, assumed or whatever the hell that the wife had moved on (when she hadn't) and 'BANG, into the rear end at about 30kph (18mph).

Admittedly our damage is not too bad (I think) but the front end on the Suzuki is a different story.

The worse damage that I can see apart from the rear bumper bar surface scarring is the RHS exhaust pipe tip that has been shoved back in about an 1 1/2". Hopefully Weasel or Killcrap can chime in and leave comment on possible damage that I can't see or am not aware of. Both exhaust brackets (RHS) at the rear and at halfway have been bent back plus the tip has been snapped upward somewhat where it is welded on to the muffler.

Amazingly all PDC sensors are ok. I still can't believe the lack of surface damage compared to the other car.

So, round 1 yet again goes to the mighty E53 X5 tank. Shit these babies are tough. I wonder what would have happened had another X5 ploughed into the back end, hmmm.

Best of luck with the repairs. Mine ended up being nearly double the initial guesstimates, after they really checked into it. But, a good body shop will get you back good as new.

I agree these X5 are tanks. I got rear end a few years back and there was just a scratch to my X but the Toyota Camry that hit me had the hood buckled up both fenders were crunched. I laughed when I saw how much damage was done to Camry and nothing to mine. The poor lady was from south africa and all she could say was "My car took the heat!"

Welcome to the club.

Wait just a minute.... You are in a club of your own, lucky bastard! Never seen pictures of an accident with before and after shots where the only discernable damage is a bent tail pipe.

Glad to hear the wife is ok and the car is not badly damaged.

when an x5 is rear ended, most of the time, all the exhaust hangers are bent forward. you can just tell by looking at the hangers, both exhaust manifold are bent(shifted forward 1-2"). The battery box is another item to check as it often becomes cracked. Remove the rear diffuser(3 phillips screws) and check battery box, while you are there, the 2 inner exhaust hangers for the rear mufflers will need to be checked, the metal brackets for these hangers should have a clearance about 4-5mm between the battery box. Since you are not equipped with a tow bar, the bumper shocks will most likely need to be replaced. If the RHS exhaust is pushed in far enough, it can contact the rear subframe and rear sway bar. So let me break it down for you to check yourself. If your air bag light is on also, i would check the POS battery cable in the trunk. and if there were any passengers wearing their seat belts, then i would check the front seat belt tensioners for triggering. If your car is equipped with Navigation, then the Navigation drive will need to be checked and the BM54 radio checked for proper operation.

Does having the tow bar in some way protect the X in a rear end collision? I have the hitch and keep the ball and tongue attached most of the time as a shield in case someone lightly bumps me. The thought being that the ball and tongue "warn" them that they've hit something before any damage is done to my bumper. Ever heard of this negatively affecting anything on the X in the event of a major collision?
