I was wondering when that was going to come up. I didn't get how an automatic transmission suddenly started making grinding noises in both D and R.

See above.

Transmission are so often discussed here that any driveline problem is assumed to be a transmission failure.

maybe some light on subject....

front driver side wheel just spins and spins. and then I noticed the outer boot was all "wounded" up. so I spin the wheel some more and notice the half shaft does not spin. pulled out half, I cut open the boot and see the spline are all fubared.
and the outer is all busted up, but boot was intact.

You didn't by chance just have the outer boots done did you? If so you can bring it back and say "WHAT DID YOU DO?" (because they either didn't put the retaining ring on properly or didn't clip it back in right)

Otherwise, a pair of new axles in the front should cure you.

Can this have anything to do with the fact you just lowered the X? Could that (or the service tech) have caused this issue?

prob not, i did it myself and i have lowered a lot of cars. i have no idea, but when lowering you don't even go near the axles or hub, you just remove the 1 18mm sway bar link nut and the 2 22mm bolts that gold the strut to hub and 3 13mm strut top nuts. but i will update tomorrow.

Eventhough it turned out to be not a trans in your case, but it's an opportunity to ask: do all 3.0 have a GM trans? Actually, I checked my VIN number on some decoding site, and indeed I have a GM trans. So is GM better than ZF when it comes to failure rate?

drove it into work today. the front left axle was the culprit. I am thinking of going ahead and swapping the passnger side too. Orielly's had them for $69... took me about 1 hour with air tools
