Add another blown X5 tranny to the list...

Finally took the X5 out today for a spin, less than 1 block away. BAM!... nothing but grinding noises in R or D..

what are some sources for a repalcement 4.4. are they the same as the 3.0?

Not the same, ZF on the 4.4, GM on the 3.0I.

Honestly it could be your axle too, when it was happening did your cluster say TRANSMISSION PROG FAIL or TRANSMISSION FAILURE?

Weasel will become famous soon enough
If your X5 is 2003 or earlier it is most likely the front output shaft splines at the transfer case stripped. It isn't all to common, but isn't uncommon either. There were a few threads on here about it.

if the output spline is torn, park wouldn't be holding the car
