X5 Morning Disaster - 2002 X5 3.0

Indy Shop just called me back. It is going to be $1,000 bucks. They mentioned oil seperator Kit cost about $200, new spark plugs $72, new oil about $70. About $480 for Labor.

They metioned the labor cost is high because they need to clean oil which was pushed into the coils & pistons. That is why spark plugs need to replaced per indy shop.

Is this possible? I thought just oil seperator needed to be replace.

Yes, it is all possible. Oil separator can cause oil to be drawn into the engine (or pushed out a valve cover gasket). The other items are resultant consequential damage of the oil separator failing.

I'm wondering how they're going to clean those oil inside the cylinder. I don't think they will remove the head to do it. maybe just a couple treatment of b12 or sea foam...which is not really labor intensive.

No, they will probably remove the spark plugs and turn the engine with the starter motor until most of the oil is out... Replace your OS and valve cover gasket yourself, there is a DIY on the site, you will save at least 500 or 600 bucks! Like WalliX5, I paid about 150 USD for all the needed parts.
The whole lot you can see on this picture cost about 600 USD, new throttle body and cam sensors included, quite enough to do a whole preventative maintenance...

Righto, I think that any X5 (E53), with 75K or more in mileage should have this done as a preventative measure. Its a real pain in the butt when it happens, and it will of course happen when its the most inconvenient to you.

Does anyone know if this issue has been resolved on the E70 X5's?
