that is how the system is designed from the factory. you can change the input instead of kl30 to KL15 with little modifcation, the connector is to the right of the drivers seat behind the carpeted cover.

What kind of modification are we talking? Soldering? I have my V1 hardwired to the one by the front passenger foot area under the glove box. I would like this one to turn off otherwise I have to remember to turn the radar detector off or else it will eventually drain my battery down. Also the one by the shifter would be nice since I plug my phone charger there. The one in the rear could stay on just in case i need that functionality.

--Thanks!

I have always wondered why this has been the design. I use the cigarette lighter socket all the time. Every BMW i have had has been this way. Are the new ones like this too??

Hi Killcrap,

Can you give us a little more detail on where to find this connector? I would like to mod my cigarette lighter as I plug my Garmin Nuvi into it and it is annoying that it does not turn off when I stop. I have an '06 3.0D RHD European spec, but I guess that the connector will be in the same place as US spec LHD, albeit mirrored to the other side...

Why not just unplug it?

Thats what I have to resort to, but the GPS is designed to turn on and off automatically if the 12v supply is switched on and off and that is a much nicer implimentation.

No, which is why you can't use a battery charger that plugs into the lighter socket. See link:
