Manual transmission - clunk on engagement
I've been getting a fairly loud clunk when putting my x5 into gear (generally 1st gear, sometimes 2, 3rd). The clunk isn't consistent (it doesn't happen all the happen or happen under the same conditions) It's a 2001 5speed manual with 91k miles. Any ideas as to what it could be? Thanks in advance Last edited by Werewolf; 01-31-2010 at 09:41 PM. |

A 2001 5Spd could be a stick or auto. You should consider filling out your signature area w/ some details of your X for future use so people will know better which engine, trans, etc that you have.
As for the clunking, I'd look around at either the guibo or center support bearing, both which hold the driveline from slapping around inside the tranny tunnel. Sounds like a good visual inspection w/ the vehicle on a lift while someone else is shifting the tranny will be your best bet.

When you're underneath the x5, what are you looking for to confirm / deny the guibo or center support bearing being an issue? Thanks |

The Guibo looks like a rubber donut between the transmission and driveline. It usually develops cracks from torque and allows the driveline to move around. The center support bearing goes around the driveline where it is split in two lines, and it has a rubber surround, kind of like an engine mount.

Siccing? Don't you mean sicking? I'm just messin w/ ya bro. Send BMWX54.4 my way, I love tearing into 18yr old kids who air their dumb and dirty laundry on the internet, then complain when people actually call him what he is for the stupid things he's done.

To be honest, I've never seen the underside of an X5 3.0 yet. When it went out in my M5, I could see it between the exhaust pipes. On my 7, I can't remember at the moment, but I'm pretty sure you have to remove the exhaust after the cats, then remove the exhaust heat shield before it's visible. Hopefully the X5 is easier to see.
