Replaced with official BMW remanufactured auto tranny @ 137K miles. I did do ATF flush with Redline ATF @ 121K miles (probably should have done it sooner, but at that time in 2005, I was getting so many different opinions...) 2001 X5 had "lifetime" fluid, which later I found out BMW's definition of "lifetime" is 100K miles.
Anyhow, even today, the BMW dealers balk about changing tranny fluid, but I would probably use BMW specific ATF fluid. Mind you, I had an automatic tranny 325is with ATF fluid flush every 30K miles and guess what, the tranny lasted till 295K miles with no problems.

I'm an advocate of tranny flushes myself, hopefully they keep lasting you as well.
