Sorry to hear about your trouble. Tough decision to make. You would save a lot of money replacing the engine yourself.

Personally with your mileage I would put the money into it....rather than buying something else.

Either way good luck with whatever you decide

7k to spend on an 8k trade-in car doesn't make financial sense. You need to either find someone who can do an engine replacement cheaper for you, or if this proves to be a serious engine problem and you can't do it any cheaper, just sell the car locally to someone who has the mechanical know-how to do the job themselves. They should be willing to pay you more than 1k for it.

Thks Faz - my local non BMW mechanic is very reluctant to go for a re-con engine (with little or no warranty), so now trying to source a 'used' engine ie from a salvage companyfor him to install at half the price. You're right - a Bmw re con engine doesn't really make financial sense unless planning to keep the car for several years - which I'm not!

You should be able to find that engine used for under $2k.

But I would find a different mechanic because the oil separator is definitely on petrol motors.

well at least you have learned your lesson .
regardless of the mod comments , I can assure you that he and others are rolling about laughing .
just entertainment for folks and not really directed at you personally in the first instance which you will see if you actually go and read the stuff properly .

your comments toward me on the other hand constitute a vile personal attack .
nuff said already , take the advice and leave us alone .
and take your anger elsewhere because I will not take any more .

Yes there are oil separators on petrol. Youtube has videos of smoke after a broken oil separator. You are right, it looks like a smoke screen laid down from an Abrams tank.
I don't know about the UK, here in the U.S. I have found taking car to a local college where they repair your car in a class room setting. Worth a try, maybe.
