E38 / E53 Instrument cluster swap?

Today I picked up what I thought was a new E38 instrument cluster that included the chrome rings but when I installed into my 2005 X5 none of the dials worked nor the mileage or odometer. According to the dealer the E38/39 cluster is interchangeable.

Some info I'm seeing is talking about an EEPROM module needs to be moved from the old to the new cluster. I'm not sure where this is or if that's even going to fix it.

Thanks in advance for any feedback. btw - I tried to install my own rings and busted one of the twist tabs in the back as a result. So, I thought buying a new one would be easier ... guess not.

Alan

I have fitted E39 2001> clusters on X5s and they are fully compatible!
