Bumping an old thread as this issue is back and the X now has about 90K miles on it. Did not do anything the last time I posted on this thread and the noise went away. But this time it is still intermittent and if it does sound screeching it does not go away until the engine is shut down.

I did look at the videos posted by Foose and the sound it pretty similar so I think I will start by replacing the belts and the pulleys (since they are due to be changed anyways). But I am little confused by the which pulleys I will need to replace. There is a tensioner pulley, idle pulley, ac pulley?. One of them has a mechanical and a hydraulic option. Would/should I need to replace all of them? Anything else other than the belts and the pulleys that I should take care of?

Thanks

It's like a pair of shoes, when the right shoes soles or heel is worn away, do you just replace the right shoe or do you replace it with a new pair?

On the AC belt there is just a tensioner with a pulley. If it has
mechanical tensioners, the pulley on those can't be replaced
separately. At least I've never seen it listed as a separate part
for the pulley. If you could identify and fine the correct pulley,
it could be replaced, but with the mechanical normal process is to
just replace the whole tensioner.

At BMW, the mechanical tensioners have been superseded with
hydraulic, but you can still buy mechanical aftermarket, which is what
I did, as the hydraulic costs a lot more. With the hydraulic,
AFAIK, the pulley can be replaced separately.
Thanks for your reply. How would I go about finding if I have a mechanical or hydraulic tensioner?

Thanks,
Entering my vehicle information in RealOEM shows a hydraulic belt tensioner. So that would mean I just need to change the pulley and not the entire hydraulic tensioner?

So here is a list of parts that I can gather that I need:
11281748131 - Tensioner pulley
11287512758 - AC tensioner assembly
11287841228 - Deflection pulley
6PK1538 - Serpentine belt
4PK0865 - AC belt

Does that sound like all the parts that I will need? Do I need to replace the hydraulic tensioner (11287838797) as well?

Thanks

get a stetha scope to narrow down the noise, you will be able to pin point it for sure. could be the alternator bearings going.

I am really hoping its not the alternator as that sounds expensive.

Did you see that separate diagram? So, it looks like you can't tell
from there which one it has, unless putting VIN in somehow narrows
it down. I guess you'd have to actually look at it to know or just order
the hydraulic one.

Assuming it's actually hydraulic, you don't need the whole tensioner,
11287838797, just the pulley. If you do get the whole tensioner,
then you don't need the pulley, it comes with it. The weird part is
that if you look at the prices, buying just the tensioner part costs a lot
more than buying the whole tensioner with the pulley.
Just took a peek and it's hard to see with the fan in place. But I noticed the mounting bolt cap protruding (pic attached) which looks like its part 19 on realOEM. (RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog). The mechanical tensioner does not seem to have something like this. Does that look right?
