I've had both the 3.0l with the 5 spd (2001), and the 4.4l with the 6 spd (2004). Gas mileage is essentially equal between the two. Average is around 18 mpg. The combination of valvetronic and the 6spd or the '04+ cars really enabled the V8 to basically equal the six cyl. The 3.0l is a great motor and it feels very willing (even in the X5) due to fairly aggressive tranny mapping. If you are satisfied with the 3.0l performance I would probably go with that due to the fact it is easier to maintain. If you think you might be able to use the extra power - towing or with heavy loads than go with the V8.

I would also ask for everybody's wheel size...some people have to deal with snow in the winter time and go to 17s where you'll see the best fuel efficiency vs others keeping 19s and 20s on...

my 18s give me 16mpg combined city/hwy on an '06 3.0

I've got the worst of both worlds, I-6 power with V-8 gas mileage . . . 17 mixed driving (hand calculated of course). If you go with what the computer says . . . you're dreamin.

2004 3.0i

Street : 15 mpg
Highway : 19mpg

*Side note: Daily uphill drive whenever I have to return home. Almost 1 mile continuously stopping and driving since some parts of the route home only allow one car to pass since other cars are parked on the curbside.

Too many gas mileage threads and polls....Too many external factors which affect mileage. Most X's are at about 14-16 mpg city and 18-21mpg highway.

I can get 23MPG with the cruise set on 75 or so. Otherwise I get around 20-21 highway. Backroad blasting knocks it down considerably to 16 or so. My primary fuel consumption counter has been untouched for a year and it reads 18.0. I do about 50/50 highway and backroad.

I get about 18 on the highway but the wife only gets about 16. She drives with a much heavier foot.
