I always wonder what the fascination is with push button start. You're giving up the ability to shut the vehicle off in the event of an electrical error. Maybe it's just me, but I'd like to have my steering always work, my brakes always work, my accelerator always work and have a kill switch in the event anything else doesn't work. If I'm ever forced to buy a push button start, I will install my own kill switch for safety. We've seen what can happen with the Toyota issues.

Cause it's cool
I've seen it done plenty of times in the E38 7 series where people just put the button in place of the foglight switch, gutted a key so they didn't need one in the ignition and it worked just fine....still on my to-do list.

Just installed a push start on 05 for a customer I don't like it the push button is nice but had to cut a key put cylinder in acc mode and put key bypass for transponder so there went a good key and you still have to carry a remote because factory doesn't work with key in ignition

smarkwilson or anyone, So would the pushbutton interfere with the maintenance. My stealership always "reads the info off the key" as he puts it? What he reads I have no idea. The push button should have no effect on the programming or display on dash?
I like to look at my battery volts.

Many years ago I drove a Renault that had a "credit card" sized and shaped key, and a push button... it was cool but i inserted the credit card into a slot anyways, so, turning the card (or the key), would not be much of a trouble... but, i had to push the button... so, in my opinion it was ridiculous... So, i am not a big fan of a push button...
i just recently got an e90 for my wife, that has a factory push button. It also has that convenience entry/start option... Now, this is totally a different story - with key in the pocket (or in the purse, for her), the push button makes perfect sense. So, in my personal opinion, the push button makes sense only if coupled with a convenience start option...

![]() When you drive your BMW to dealer's workshop for a service check, all you need to do is hand over your car key. All BMW models from the year 2000 or later store important vehicle information - the chassis number, mileage and the next due service date - on the key itself. Your BMW service partner accesses this using the electronic KeyReader. This system saves time and prevents errors, giving you and your BMW service partner more time to discuss your individual needs in greater detail. ![]()

Thanks Qsilver7, I was not sure if going the convience key and push button start would mess that up. Like the poster above stated you have to cut a key for the kits. I was looking at the rfid key setups. That cut key stays in the ignition they put a cover over it. My Service advisor face would be red probably when he needs to get the key info...
