Dont know much about your problem but I would definitely disconnect the battery and let it have a fresh start. The other day my TV went funny, with sound going ON then OFF all the time so I did a complete refresh and it`s fine now. Just like when the PC goes bad and you re boot it I suppose.

Sounds like faulty fuel level senders (1 or possibly both). Dealer can check fault memory in the instrument cluster to know for sure.

Popular problem on the '01's, as suggested earlier get them to check the fuel senders.
They eventually lemoned my "01 as it happened 9 times in some very sticky situations where the fuel guage got stuck at quarter to half a tank full and we ran out on Freeways/intersections and the last straw was 100 yards from home after driving across the country for 6 weeks Best of luck.

Had the same thing happen to my 2001 X5 3.0i - fuel was full and would not register - the dealer had to replace a faulty fuel sender. This may be just paranoi on my part but ever since then I don't try to overfill my car - when the pump automatically shuts off, I put the fuel cap back on - I remember somebody telling my that BMW's are sensitive to that - again that may just be a myth but have not had a problem since then - that was 2 years ago.

So if the tank is full...
and the gauge reads zero, is the truck going to shut off? Or can I go to manual trip and MPH calculations?

Fuel Gauge
My 2001 3.0 started doing this about 8 months ago. It only happens when I let the fuel level drop below 1/4 tank. When I refuel, the gauge only comes back up to 1/4 tank. It comes back to full after a drive and cycling the ignition a few times. It has gotten worse with time. I'm sure I will have to eventually replace the sending unit(s). It is quite an expensive repair especially for the purpose it serves. I will definitely not deal with it until the gauge fails completely and even then I might just stick with the trip meter.
