Whistle Pinch Brake Lines..........

This sounds like a stupid question.................but...................:du nno:

How do you properly "pinch the Brake line"????

Is there a special tool for this and if so where do you get them from?

I read people talking about it but no proper discussion about how to do it. Wouldn't the lines get ruptured????

Indy owner says don't clamp brake lines

After I went thru a frozen caliper, rebuilt in and bled, pedal went to floor. Took to dealer and their high tech computers and bleeders brought the pedal back to life via bleeding. I then asked an independent guy about it. He said you should not clamp the brake lines. Bleeding might be needed by dealer. I think I got a lot of air in my brake system and the ABS module got confused.

The objective is not to pinch it, which implies that the line could be damaged, but rather to slow the rate of fluid dripping out of the line. Point is to be careful not to damage the line. I have always used visegrips (very gently), but one example of the proper tool looks like this (there are various styles).

Thanks for the picture. I hope auto part stores would have it, if not will use vise grips or a small "c" clamp to pinch the line

Small c clamps work fine as well. The whole point is just to slow it to a slow drip, and not crimp it.

I use these on small hoses:

Lisle Corporation

They're cheap, the round shape reduces the chance of damaging the hose, and the screw adjustment allows for fine control of the tension/amount of compression force you apply.

they also have rubber plugs and caps at your local auto store.. cap the hard brake lines or plug the hose ends...

There are types of pliers with smooth rounded jaws made to pinch the hoses gently, as well as some smaller screw close type clamps with the same design for pinching. Just be extra careful not to pinch too hard and break the inner liner because it can cause an internal flap that acts as a one way valve causing pressure problems.

Also, if you use a prybar or something to hold the brake pedal down about 1/3rd to 1/2 way the valving in the master cylinder should be closed off not letting extra fluid through after the initial pressure release.

I take it you're changing the calipers or something?
