Procedure to replace front control arm bushings (31126769715)
I was reading through the E39 Bentley. I heard the E53 and E39s actually use the same parts though they're installed backwards. Any help will be greatly apprecaited. |

Yes you need special tools including jacks, supports, etc. Procedure isn't complicated but it needs to be done right.

Hi X5 Meister,
Do you need special tools to press out and reinstall the bushings? Just wondering if there is a link to the procedure to do it right. Best regards, |

Yes that's what I said, you need special tools to do the job. I believe the procedure is in the BMW TIS or you can check the Bentley manual.

Another option is to buy new arms with the bushings already pressed in. This will save some time and will be easier. You just need to remove the one bolt that passes through the bushing (need large wrenches (21mm or 22mm I think).
There is a special tool needed to get the arm off of the ball joint spindle. The Bentley manual shows a special clamp. I used a pickle fork since I was going to replace the ball joints at the same time. I wasn't worried about damaging the ball joints. |
