Thanks for the help everyone, it is very appreciated as I will be saving my family member tons of money, in tough times.

Looks like I will purchase the diff fluid 75-90W Mobile 1, and the transmission oil I will double check the P/N on the pan and make sure I get the correct one with the link you provided "m5james".

Another Question:

"ncsucarjock", mentioned I should probably change the transfer case oil as well. Is the BMW transfer case oil the only way to go on this? Or is there an alternative oil that is comparable?

From '04 onwards the X5 had a new X drive transfer case. For those models, use the BMW original fluid from the dealer or another BMW supplier in the transfer case.

James, I was able to get underneath my brother in law's car this morning and saw it had a green label, part# 83220024359. I looked that up in the link you provided as well as a search of threads on xoutpost.com and it turns out I can use Dexron VI. I chose to go with Valvoline Dexron VI (full synthetic), and I got it for $5.50 a quart at Kragen.

I won't be doing the work just yet, as I still have to receive additional items that are going to replaced during the tune-up.

Sounds good. Make sure you get a Filtran filter for the transmission. I can't remember the name of some of the other ones, but there have been stories of the generic filters collapsing under the pressure of the pump inside the transmission, causing a sucking sounds to happen all the time while driving. Sorry I didn't mention it earlier...hopefully it's not too late. If you've already got a filter, hopefully there is a warranty just in case.

I haven't gotten the filter yet, but I was planning on changing the filter maybe at the 100k mark? But for now just do a simple drain and fill.

But yea for the filter I will probably stick with the original or something equivalent in quality.

Elring Klinger - is this brand transmission filter good quality? (says they are OEM supplier). I plan on getting it through Pelicanparts.com, when time comes, since they are local and have good pricing and I can do will call pick up as well.
