05' X5 - Transmission and Diff Fluid Drain and Fill Amount?
I am soon going to be performing a tune-up on my brother in law's 05' X5 3.0 (60k miles), and was not sure how much fluid is typically needed on a typical drain and fill for the transmission and the differential fluid? I saw the DIY post on the 4.4l X5 transmission drain and fill, but that is most likely a different transmission I'm guessing? Thanks |

I have an 05 X5 3.0i with 65k on it now, and I will NOT be doing a transmission fluid change on it. The topic has been discussed here in many threads (you can search), and there are some pros/cons to doing this, and in the end, people decide for themselves if they want to go ahead with it or not.
Just wanted to throw this out there in case you had not seen those discussions.

Yea I've come across those threads during a search and I still plan on changing it regardless of it stating that it is lifetime, just want to make sure I do buy enough quarts so I do not fall short on the change for both transmission and differential.

Measure what u take out and replace with the same amount. Either way, once you drain just fill up until it starts pouring out of the fill inlet.

Ok, thanks for the response.
I have another question, as I came across apparently there are different transmission manufacturers in the X5 and each take different type of transmission oil, so how would I find out which one mine takes? Dexron III or Dexron VI, is what I've come across. Will the auto parts store know? Also what weight differential fluid? |

For differential fluid I used Mobil 1 75-90 I think. (that was 20k miles ago). Cant' comment on the tranny fluid, i have a different model. Go check the tips-n-tricks (FAQ?) section (go to the homepage, you'll see a link for it) They should explain all you need to know there.
Good call on the diff and tranny fluid changes. Not a bad time to do transfer case as well...I think ECS tuning sells transfer case fluid. |

AFAIK, '04 and up uses 75-XX with LSD . Do your own due diligence

Please Clarify if Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 is a 'Limited Slip" Product?I just purchased your Mobil 1 75W-90 differential oil from Auto Zone. It mentions on the back that it's suitable for "limited slip" type differentials, however it is not very clear on whether a LS additive is required. So, I visited your website which advertises LS 75W-90. There is no "LS" on the product I bought. IF this is the same oil can you please ensure the bottle is labeled properly? I recently bought a 4x4 with limited slip and want to ensure I do not damage the vehicle. BTW, I'm a hard core Mobil 1 fan, having used your various products for the last 8 years. As a result, we have recently changed the label to adequately convey the limited slip feature of Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90.I love, and use just about exclusively Mobil One products. From their bottles, and their information online, Mobil One Synthetic 75-90W is perfectly sufficient for the BMW's Xdrive system. |

Valvoline MaxLife is Esso compatible. There are writeups on www.e38.org as to the proper filling procedures in case you accidently spill what you've removed, otherwise follow what jst2878 suggested.
If there isn't a link on the E38 site, the 3.0 engine and transmission is shared in the E46 3 series as well. http://bimmerinfo.com/e46trans.htm Hopefully some of these links help.
