Question 4.6 Flares Help!!

I have a 4.6 with the flares. I am replacing one of the the "Bumper Supports" (Part #2: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...22&hg=51&fg=15 )

The one that I am replacing had a bolt (no idea who the hell did this shoddy work, I am the second owner) securing the Bumper Support in the hole that is at the lower end of the piece.

I have been to the dealership to buy the correct fastener to mount the Bumper Support but they do not know what fastener I need. The diagram does not show which one to use. It does look loke a large plastic rivet on the one securing my other Bumper Support.

Anyone know what the part number is for the fastener????

If its a large plastic rivit then the code is 51471911992 it about 30 cent the same plastic rivit is used on a variety of parts on the X5 and other models

Man, I thought this would be an easy thing to get and install. Little did I know the hardest part would be to get the fasteners to install it!!

Thank you for the retrofit PDF. Quite helpful. On the PDF it shows retaining clips for the back side of the Bumper Support. I had no idea (neither did the dealer) that these were even part of the install. I had never seen or heard of them. I was a bit puzzled on how the fitings for support would stay in the holes. I was thinking I needed to put a bit of epoxy to get them to stay on.

I guess I will have to drop the bumper in order to mount the retaining clips to the back side of the bumper suport.

Unfortunately the PDF does not give part numbers, so close and yet so far. It indicates the fasteners I need are the "L" Blind Rivets. I will take all of my new info and hit the ole BMW parts counter.

I was actually given some of the "Fixing Plugs" Part number 51471911992 as Sudesh mentioned. They are #20 on the the Rear Bumper schematic:

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...22&hg=51&fg=15

Not sure if this the "Blind Rivet" mentioned above. I do not quite understand how they work. They seem just to push into place. Why do they have a "two level" top to them? Do you push them into the first lip and then cut of the top part???

Really wish BMW parts computer gave a better description fo how this Bumper Support gets attached!!! They failed to tell you about the retaining clips on the back or which fastener goes into the bottom.

Is there anyone else who has done a stock install of the Bumper Support on their 4.6?? Or even someone who has done the retrofit?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

The way the rivit works is, you push it into the hole first, then you push the top part (the plunger) of the rivit into the bottom part forcing the bottom part of the rivit to spread open/widen inside the bumper giving a firm grip.

The part number for the rivet is 51-71-8-219-511

If you tell the parts counter to look-up the install kit for the body flares it's an indented BOM #51-11-7-073-517 of which the above part number is part of (including 51-71-7-002-953)
