Bmw Assist Unavailable

I was driving tonight, in the open (ie, not overhanging trees or skyscrapers). Suddenly, the red light for the phone came on the MID, and a message that BMW ASSIST UNAVAILABLE. I couldn't get the phone to work, the radio to come on, or get rid of that message. I even pushed the Assist SOS button, and it indeed didn't work. I turned the car off briefly at a red light, but no joy. I checked by cell phone, and it showed that the Bluetooth connection to the BMW was still active.

I gave up worrying about it, thinking I would have to arrange a dealer visit. About 5 minutes later, the red light is off, the message disappears, and everything is working normally again.

Any ideas?

Or gnomes...

Going to the dealer might help. They might have seen other instances. But then again, if they haven't heard of that problem and you can't reproduce it... what can they say.

Happened again last night, for ~5 minutes. Beyond irritating! If is was just the temporary loss of hands-free phone, that would just be bothersome. The temporary loss of BMW Assist is a safety issue to me. I guess I will be taking it to the dealer sometime soon to have this checked.

I can just see it now... "Unable to duplicate".... I know how these morons work. Do you have a good relationship with your dealer? Otherwise you might want to ask them right over the phone if they can fix this instead of wasting your time....

Sorry to be bitter but I had to fight with the dealer to get some things fixed, and I'm still not happy about having to escalate to BMWNA about it. Sheez!

Well, I have a good relationship with my SA and salesman, both of whom used to work at the local MB/Volvo dealership (where I bought 4 cars over the years). Good idea about calling first.

This happened to us @ 2:00AM this morning when I needed roadside assistance. Didn't know the system wasn't working till I pushed the SOS button. Then it took ~10 minuted just to get the radio / paired BT phone funtions back.
Did the dealer find anything? I called BMW Assist and they said I have to take it to a dealer.
ARGH.

Didn't do anything about it, yet, because of the holidays. I will deal with it sometime.

Took our X in yesterday and the stealer says it needs a new TCU... normally not a problem because it would be under warranty, but I replaced the TCU with an '05 so I could have assist and bluetooth. Have to wait to the talk to the service advisor Monday to see if they will order the newer module or if we are SOL.
