![]() For the poster who had the mechanic that wants to replace the reservoir: If you have quite a few miles on the vehicle, it won't hurt to replace the reservoir (especially if they aren't charging you additional labor to do it). Pretty low cost item and that filter will clog up over time as the system isn't sealed (reservoir is vented).

power steering fluid
Hey guys. While changing a cv boot I jacked up my x5 at the center front jacking point and put jack stands under the jack pads in the front. I noticed atf leaking onto the floor. I looked and the drip was forming on the boot on the inner tie rod. But I couldn't tell where it was coming from. Any ideeas?

2002 X5 3.0 Very slow leak at bottom of the pump
I see a drop of power steering oil at the most lowest part of the power steering pump. It appears (not 100% certain) to be leaking where the pressure hose in connected to the pump at the bottom. I got my mechanic to replace the gasket ring#6 (see the new diagram link) but it is still leaking.
RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i HYDRO STEERING-OIL PIPES Since it is a slow leak it is very hard to trace the leak. My mechanic says it is leaking from the pump but I don't see it leaking from the pump (My mechanic uses the shot gun approach; My power window got stuck and he said the motor had gone. But when I gave a small push it goes up so he says well the "power of the motor is not enough to push the glass as the motor is weak. I told him that I hear a clicking/breaking sound when the glass is going up or down so it has to be the window cable assembly . Then he says then replace both. I asked him only to replace the cable assembly and my window is working fine) Should I replace the #3 Pressure horse assembly? Any tips to trouble shoot |

HELP - Power Steering Hose / Leak Question
Hello!
On my 2006 X5 3.0i, I have the power steering hose leak also which was diagnosed by BMW of Fairfax. I currently have it at a local shop to replace the hose; however, I just received a call from the shop to replace the reservoir also since it must be removed to replace the hose. The logic that the shop guy used is that "the reservoir will eventually need replacing, but nothing is wrong with it." Is it actually necessary to remove the reservoir to replace the hose or is this total BS? Thanks. |

Look at the RealOEM picture at the beginning of this thread. Both hoses was holded by two clamps #5 & #14. The reservior is by itself. There is a filter screen at the bottom of reservior. On the other hand, I would not replace it usless you have a very high mileage car. Good luck.

HELP - Power Steering Hose / Leak Question
Thanks ABWMMA and NYCSterling for the response.
I've looked at the diagram. Please confirm this: It is not necessary to remove the power steering reservoir to replace the hose. |

If he access from the top, the answer is Yes. If he put the car on a lift and access from the bottom, the answer is NO. Btw, removing the reservoir is not a big deal. I would not waste my $$. Save your $$ for something elase.

There is nothing in my owners manual about how to check the level of fluid. I found the resevoir opened it up but other than a few marks on the dipstick it doesnt show where the level should actually be. Any help??? Also, should it be checked cold or warm?
