Leak under Power Steering resevoir

Looks like I have a leak right under the PS resevoir. I did a search on the forum and it look slike this is sort of normal.

2006 4.4i with 56K

I am thinking I need part #4 and #14.
If anyone else had this issue, please chime in and let me know if I am on the right track.

How difficult is it to change that hose and clamps? any special tools I need?

I also picked up some Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF Multi Vehicle Formula to top off with. resevoir is currently half...

Is the Mobile 1 ok to use?

The end of hose #4 to cooling coil looks similar to AT hose I worked on, check this out:

BTW, I used crescent wrench to push the plastic lever and didn't buy that special tool.

As far PS fluid, check with dealer part dept. BMW uses so many different fluid I just hate to top it of with wrong one. PS or ATF won't cost you arm and leg ala exotic ZF trans fluid.

Thanks HPI.. thats exactly what the end looks like... Where do u buy the tool? I will google the BMW part number I see on it.

Also, I think I also need to change hose #3, BUT it could be that fluid from #4 is leaking on #3. I might just do #4 and the clamp and see what happens.

That sure is a tight location....

I had this problem with my E39, and have it now with my X5. It is apparently a very common problem.

The solution on my E39 was to replace the original hose clamp (going to the bottom of the Power Steering fluid reservoir) with a better one. I used the worm gear style clamp available at any parts store. I haven't taken the time to do the X5 yet, but it has held for 6 years now on my E39. Maybe try that first before replacing any hoses.

I found it easier to simply open the OEM clamp up, and move it further down the hose, rather than try to remove the clamp entirely.

Is that the Power Steering Situation Hose Return Line? My dealer told me this was a common problem in the X5. Quoted me $250 to fix it. I told him no thanks, will probably try to DIY.

ok.. i will clean the 2 hose and move the clamp down a bit and monitor for more leaks.

I am not sure how many points are leaking... it could be 1 leak at #14 that drips down and wet the other stuff.

Thanks for the responses guys...

Make sure that you put new clamps on too! The common cause of this problem is that the OEM clamp isn't holding the hose on tight enough, causing the leak. Replacing the OEM clamp with a worm gear style clamp will allow you to tighten it better, and likely seal off the leak. I found it easier to move the clamp down the hose, rather than to try and remove it completely.
