my climate control comes on but no fan, heater, ac

Hi,
My X5 2001, climate control console unit comes on, but no heater, fan or AC. So i opened the glove compartment to check the fuse, to my shock, the previous owner had two wires connected to the Big 50amp fuse i believe the cheapskate was too cheap to buy a new 50amp fuse, also when i check the fuse it was clearly blown, so he attached the wire to maintain current flow. Anyways, when i connected those wire touched, the blower came on, even though there was no key in the ignition, which is weird. I left a few minutes thinking it would go off, but it didn't so i disconnected the wire and the blower went off. I am not sure whether the previous owner messed up the module that send signal from the control unit to the blower, or maybe the FSR is dodgy. I am thinking of getting a a switch to to control the electric current flow so that when i start the car, i flick the switch it then comes on and i can then control the speed and temperature from the console itself, until i take it to BMW which i am dreading, has anyone seen this unusual problem before and what was the cure?

Thanks

I'd check the final stage resistor first as it is what sends power to the blower, and they are prone to internal failure that can send constant power to the blower.

If it is the FSR, it would be physically obvious on the old one if it is failed. And odds are once that is replaced the blower will resume normal operation. (with a new fuse)

It is on the passengers side under the dash, on the side if the HVAC box. There is a search box on the left side of the home page that will bring up numerous threads on this including replacement writeups. (great feature for newcomers as most topics have been beat to death on this forum )

removed the old FSR already and it looked normal. hmm.

waiting for the new FSR. hoping only the FSR needs changing... i'm wondering why my aircon controls and the screen doesn't work even before removing the FSR... is the controls related to the FSR?

The screen is blank/doesn't work??? Then it wouldn't be the FSU, but either a fuse or a failed panel. The OP has working AC controls, but erratic fan speeds and fan staying on after key off. That is the FSR.
