Right, I get that they are 2 separate parts, but my car didn't have a thermostat when I pulled the expansion tank. Hence the question.

Yes, the P.O. Or mechanic probably threw it away.

Some people sell genuine BMW tstat on ebay for cheap.

Thanks CN90. I did purchase a genuine one thinking there was one in there already and I need to replace. I will go ahead and install one.
