Vanos oil line question.

2003, 3.0i.

All of a sudden, fairly significant oil leak noticeable from top, either vanos line banjo fitting or oil filter housing. My banjo fitting has two crush washers one on either side of the banjo. Realoem on shows only one washer on the bolt side of the fitting. Which is right? Seems on other similar cars I remember 2.

Whichever your truck has is likely the right setup. RealOEM is a guide, all be it, very detailed, but nothing more. BMW is known to make slight part modifications during production.

I looked at realoem diagram.
They are wrong.
There are 2 washers.

I simply re-use the washers, just mark the orientation (which side faces the cyl head, bolt etc.), then re-install the washers exactly like factory

Use only Cohline brand.

2 washers on each end of that VANOS line.

But it seems odd that something let loose suddenly like this after a couple of weeks of no leak. Similar for OFHG. I don't see how those would go from tight to blowing oil so quickly.

On the other hand, there are some CCV lines with pinch- or twist-lock fittings in the vicinity there. I can see how one of those could have been on well enough to seal, and then popped off. So I'd keep that in mind while tracking down the source.

Good luck. Glad you're onto the little things like this after the big job.

Vanos oil line question.

Thanks. I replaced both washers yesterday and the drips have slowed underneath. Tight on time yesterday so I’ll go into it more today. I suspect when I reattached the banjo I didn’t snug it up enough. Still looking for a way to get my big wrench on to the top of the oil filter housing. Geez, seems they’d make that easier- what is it 32mm or something.

Good news is she’s been 300+ miles and up to highway speed with no signs of overheat or CELs. A bit of lifter tick at idle is only symptom ( I replaced several lifters but not all)
