Air conditioner problem
I just encountered a problem with my A/C, cold air comes, but it trickles, it doesn't blow. Even on max power. Now i read past posts and realized it might be the FSR. I just removed it, how can i tell if its broken, because im unsure of buying a new one. Other than the burn marks on the side, mine has none. Thanks Last edited by IloveBMWs; 08-03-2010 at 06:24 PM. |

If the FSR is the old style with big conical spikes for heat syncs it very well could be bad, if it has a bunch of thin aluminum rods as the heat sync it is the newer style and much less prone to failure. Is there a raised line prominent on the epoxy part of the FSR near the plug? The circuit that fails usually overheats to the point pushing up and making a raised line in the epoxy.

Hey,
I appreciate the response. ![]() It is indeed the older style FSR, with the thicker prongs. And it was quite hot when i did a test with it. I didnt see any prominent size differences. Just wanted to make sure this could be the problem because i recently had problems with my radio not working. I went under the spare tire and unplugged the battery, doing a full reset. Now im a new BMW owner so im not sure if it would have an affect? I just wanna make sure i get my moneys worth for this. If you are sure i need to replace it would it be possible to redirect me to a good site to purchase one on? (Im not a huge fan of ebay) Thanks alot, Greg |

Can't be fully sure without doing physical diagnosis, but as long as the battery is fully charged it is likely to be the the FSR as it is what controls the fan speed. You can get it at a decent price from this link.

Just one last question, off topic.
I love what you did with you BMW in your signature. What did you do with your front and rear lights? They look awsome. |

Thanks. I modified the OEM headlights by removing the fluted wafers, adding angel eyes, trimming back the reflector lens and tinting the headlight lens with automotive paint. In those pics the tail lights had aresol can spray tint made for lights on them, but the stuff faded out to crap and I'm soon to respray them to match the headlights with automotive paint as well.

Hi Guys.....i hope you dont mind, me joing in....My BMW 2001 4.4 X5, i had it topped up with Freon, 2 months ago......last weekend the A/C stopped working so i took it to my regular mechanic who said it was due to the A/C being topped too often, which had caused the compressor to blow up, plus he is convinced that the Evaporator needs replacing as well, which is a big job as the dashboard need to be removed?
This looks like it is going to cost me a fortune 20,000HKD = 2,600 USD, any advice would be gratefully received? |

Hi everyone just came to inform you guys that a week ago I ordered an FSR (Final Stage Resistor) on Pelican Parts thanks to weasal's advice and it came today. Change it with the old one and works like a charm! Thanks for the advice, i love this forum. Finally cool air!
