M62 - Starter hangs up

Hello there,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself and share my recent purchase woes. I just purchased a 2003 X5 4.4 with 88K miles and the starter hangs up and does not disengage straight away when the engine is started. I've been told the starter is bad but wanted to see if anybody out there is or has experienced this same symptom. My guess is the bendix is sticking but would love to hear any thoughts.

Just for grins I'm charging the battery overnight and will see if it still hangs up after a good overnight charge. If not I guess a new starter/rebuild will be in order and I'll be searching for a starter replacement DIY.

This E53 is my 6th bimmer and I typically wrench on my my own stuff with much help from forums such as this one - thank you DIY posters!!!

P.S. Yes, I've tried searching . . .

:::UPDATE::: I replaced the starter with a remfg Bosch and have no more issues with the hang up noise. Sorry I didn't have time to document a DIY but it was pretty straight forward once the top E12 torx bolt is loosened.

I've got the same starter hang up with grinding noise for a second.

I've got a new starter, just arrived today, and I'll be replacing it tonight.

Do you have any advice for replacing the starter successfully? Mine is the V8 engine.

Mine was a 4.4 as well.

After getting the sub frame plate down, the hardest part of the install is loosening the top E Torx bolt (E12). You will need a extension 6-10" in order to get a ratchet up in there for clearance. Use a ratch with the longest handle possible as you will need leverage in order to break the bolt free. I also removed the O2 sensor as well for more room. There are a couple wires that I manuvered out of the way as well. You can dissconnect the postive (red) battery cable (19mm on firewall) in stead of digging through the spare tire.

Good light and alot of patience is key. If you're flat backing it in the garge use good jack stands and add an extra set for redundancy.

I changed the starter and the hang up is gone. The solenoid spring must get weak over time and it allows the pinion gear to stay engaged longer than it should. I'm not sure if that would be damaging to the starter or the flywheel, but I'd recommend getting it fixed like I did. If nothing else it gets rid of the embarrassing noise!

I have the same hangup and my friend said immediately its the starter going bad, he says replace soon, otherwise you can cause damage to the flywheel. I think I will order a bosch, they have other brands for less...but I stick with OEM brand.

i too may have the same issues...i searched the threads....when you mean hang up, what exactly do you mean? once in a while when i go to start the car, it just clicks...then nothing, i turn the key back to 0, then try again and vroom...without a hitch?

one of the guys says that we're passing the run position on the ignition too fast , not allowing the computer to do it's job.
