Question 02 4.4 Head Gasket?

I will rescue my X5 from a dealer this week. They want $20k for a remanufacted engine because they suspect cylinder/ring damage, because a compression check indicated 185psi on 6 cylinders and on the two suspect cylinders side-by-side indicated 140psi.
The truck has 151k miles on it, and stranded my wife out-of-town last week with white smoke and a "SES" light on the dash. No abnormal temperature indications. (Yeah I know about the inaccuracy of the indicating system). I called and had it towed to the nearest dealer. After several phone conversations with the Service Manager; I've surmised that I'd better get it home ASAP and check it myself.
I highly suspect a blown head gasket. I can only hope that this is the extent of the damage. If after a thorough visual inspection this holds true; I'll resurface and pressure test the head and check the block for straightness.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so, are there any obstacles to look for? Any tricks or secrets? Any help is appreciated.

You really need to get a cylinder leakdown test done... Compression test is good to show you relative compression, but that's it. Leakdown test puts air pressure into the cylinder and tells you what percent is leaking out, and you can tell the area of the problem by where the air is leaking. You can hear if the air leak is coming out of the intake, exhaust, neighboring cylinder, oil fill cap, dipstick tube, cooling system, etc. By where the air is passing out of the cylinder you can tell if it is cylinder wall/rings, valve seats, valve guides, head gasket, etc.

I would have thought they'd do that. I will do it when it's safe at home.
Thanks Weasel.

Mine had started running rough with lack of power last year. plugs showed oil getting into the cylinders. had to replace valve gaskets & valve cover gaskets. runs great again.

time to get another "opinion".

Thanks Mark, good point. I'll get it home Wednesday and start the process. Can't wait to determine the problem.

Just got the X5 home. It's running great with "NO" smoke. Temperature is normal. I ran the code scanner and found: PreCat Oxygen sensor slow response cyl. 1-4, AfterCat Oxygen sensor aging cyl. 1-4, Misfire cyl. 1, Misfire cyl. 3, Misfire, Random/multi cyl, Secondary Air System #5-8, Map controlled Thermostat circuit/control, Engine cooling fan control. I checked the oil level and it was perfect with no moisture present and checked the coolant level and it was perfect with no oil present. Plugs were fresh before the incident. I'm at wits end now. I don't think a leak-down test is really necessary now........but what is? I cleared the codes, to include the "SES" light. Any help is appreciated.

What are the symptoms that you were having diagnosed? I'm trying to figure out what they were diagnosing that led them to that prognosis?

Wife was out of town, when suddenly it started emitting lots of "smoke" (or steam), then upon shutting the engine off and pulling the key out of the ignition, she noticed the "Service Engine Soon" warning light displayed on the dash. No sign of overheating or high temp. readings on the guage.
I was out of town also; so we had it towed to the nearest dealer for diagnosis. It was after that, that they started shooting in the dark.
We just test drove it over 20 miles this afternoon with NO problems.
Should I throw money at it, trade/sell it, or just drive and watch it?

Hopefully the codes were cleared, in which case I would drive it and see if it acts up again, and if it does see what codes come back as current.

Thanks Daniel. We'll drive and watch it. I'll check the codes again tomorrow.
