WVMTNBIKER,
Although it would not be classified as scintillating reading, you ought to
crack the Owners Manual, and spend an hour leafing through it: a lot
of good info contained there in; if you don't have one, they are pasted
on this site, in easy to read pdf files.

My fault...

MotorDavid: yep, I have the full OEM manual/packet.
The day I purchased the X5 my mother-in-law passed away while we were in SC visiting.
It seems that these past few weeks have been a whirlwind of emotions and overlooks, as in "read the owners manual, Dan".

Being the very time I had to use the heater, I just simply did not notice the vent dial right in the middle of the dash.
But you can bet this weekend I'll be soaking up information from the owners manual and see what I can learn from it.

This forum has been kind to me, even on simple issues like this one. The big help came from questions I had about four wheel alignment and changing an outer CV joint boot. There is no doubt you guys have saved me $$$$$$$$$$$ over a "stealer". For that sir, you have my deepest thanks.
