WOW - expensive thing,

before letting them replace the whole mechanism I would go for some Epoxy and try to glue the plastic into the metal. If it breaks again the dealer can replace it - if not you would be set.

This is a known problem on the 5 series, and I'm pretty sure they use the same shifter, so no surprise there. You have to replace the ENTIRE shifter. It's expensive and a PITA.
