There are a few kits on eBay that claim to be a E53 X back up cam retrofit that are supposedly OEM,300$-900$,little spendy IMHO.

I just sold my pre-facelift tail lights where I had drilled one and fitted a rear view camera and fitted the 04-06 tail lights...(much nicer)..No ,I am not offtopic....to replace my camera ,I just bought this Car Rear View Reverse Backup Camera For BMW E46 & X5 - eBay (item 250701178316 end time Dec-22-10 09:31:39 PST)

I checked the measurements of my license plate bulb and they coincide with the measurements the seller put in the listing! Will post back when I get it

Sorry to burst the bubble, but it is the same camera that we talked about earlier in this post, type A, just a different seller. You can take a look at how the facelift trim looks inside, I posted the photos above.
Cameras like this only fit plug-n-play on systems like say E60, where the license plate bulb comes up with its own case, unlike E53 where only the transparent plastic cover comes off.

What do you guys think of this idea: I am going to be installing a hualingan headunit in the next few weeks and I ordered it with a backup camera as well. However, realizing how cheap the camera is there is a good chance that it may have to be replaced as time goes on. Any reason I could not run a standard RCA video cable from the headunit to the back of the X5 and then plug in the backup camera's RCA cable into that cable so when it comes time to replace I don't have to rerun the cable to behind the dash again and again. The only issue I can think of would be the overall length of the cable run with two cables being used but it isn't that long of a run so it should be fine. Also, what length cable would you suggest from the back of the head unit to the trunk? 10'?
Thanks

The interface for your pre 2010 X5 has a no cut or splice connection. All hooks up with wire harness. they are running 400+ on the e70 area, but I have 3 units I aquired if you would like one. 200.00 plus shipping. Had a camera as well, but someone grabbed it with the first interface i sold. PM me if you would like it. I can forward you details and insruction as well. BTW camera still need to splice into somewhere to get power and ground. can be found on ebay.. HTH
Are you still having the Rear Camera interface/ wire harness for E53 ?

If you want to really have the OEM look, you can find a TV Tuner Module and tap into that. That's what I did in my E38. Bought a camera on eBay and mounted inside the bumper trim. (which the X5 lacks) I also added a factory looking black switch so I can flip it on while moving forward. This method requires a relay and taping into the Reverse light as well as running wires front to rear.

Here's what you don't want to see in the RVM.

At risk of flame: Really think some of the plate cams look very good

I agree, that is the sleekest one I've seen. If mine had nav etc. I'd go that route. Much easier and cost effective. #FLYNNLIVES

I didn't have Nav in my 2002 X5 but put it in. Took a few weekends and very light cutting of dash.
