Yes, it's an easy DIY. I did it just recently and I found it to be about as easy as changing spark plugs. See the link at this URL.

Thanks for that.
I'm assuming all i need is a new oil separator/ccv and a valve cover gasket. Hopefully this will fix my problem. |

Don't forget the hoses...
The new oil separator is useless without the four related hoses. Plus, you will likely destroy one or two of the old ones just getting it out of the car...

Ok, noted. Thanks for that.

well we did the PCV, hoses and the valve cover gasket. The gasket was very easy.......the PCV not so easy.
glad its done though. The PCV in Australian delivered X5's are different to the U.S delivered. Much more difficult to get to and to remove. It looked a lot easier in the DIY but we didnt realise there was a difference. |

I didn't realize the OSV could cause a burning rubber smell. My guess would have been a belt slipping on a pully from the alternator, a/c or power steering pump.

Its the failing of the PCV/OSV that causes a pressure build up which inturn usually damages the rubber gaskets around the valve cover. Once damaged the gasket leaks small amounts of oil onto the heat sheild or exhaust and you get the burning oil smell.

Is it always an oil separator? Or can the valve cover gasket just leak on its own?

Changed VC Gasket a few days ago, no more smell. Yay.
