if you are buying a used car you have to wonder how the original owner treated it, from my experience there seems to be an attitude amongst the folks who can afford to buy these new, and that is its under warranty service is free so drive it, and treat it, like you stole it.

when i was looking i was amazed at how many abused x5, 5/6 years old there was, seats and interior trim knocked around, and come on, 20k between oil changes nuh not for me

as for German engineering , well they may have designed it but where was it built and assembled, yeah um guess what its probably one of the best built US cars, anyone driven a Dodge Caliber, now theres a piece of S##t

and what about some of the later model Jeeps , what where they thinking

and how about the H2 Bummer, what moron designed and built that

actually i like my x5 3.0d i see some issues but overall i think it is well built and suits my needs well

x5

C'mon guys, the X5 is a POS, I've had an e30 great, e36 m3 great, two e39's great, but the X5? what a bunch of problems. I fix most myself but c'mon, My tranny is already slipping and I've had to replace alot of parts. It's an SUV that isn't really a drivers truck or able to tow. I love the drive of a good BMW but the X5 is really nothing special imho. My old Lexus is much more reliable, better ride and a better towing rig. I'll drive BMW on the track but tow and daily drive with a Lexus SUV by choice. Please don't label me as a bmw hater, I have three but the X5, just not impressed. For the record 2003 X5 4.4 sport

Hell no, I have a love affair with mine!

The only work I have done to mine, was because I wanted to!, There has been not a single thing that needed repair. My 04 4.4 was the same, never a problem!

Mine is great and it tows 6k lbs. It's actually one of the very best vehicles I've ever owned. You have an earlier e53 and I have the last year run, an 06. Your generalization is incorrect.

apparently there has been a mile stone reached in the production of X5,s

1,000,000th car has been built recently, so compare that with the number of people on here complaining of poor quality and failing components and i think all will agree they are in the minority.

and my humble opinion is that most catastrophic failings will be due to owner abuse, and not always the present owner but previous owners.

interesting quote

Throughout its life so far the BMW X5 has earned the following distinctions: “autonis” prize awarded by the trade journal “Auto Motor und Sport” for the most attractive design, Gold Award in the J.D. Power Study on customer satisfaction in North America and “Top Safety Pick” for outstanding crash test behaviour both in 2007 and 2008 from the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

i,m real happy with mine, its not a race / rally car just a real comfortable and fairly quick means of transport.

if i want to go off road i take my jeep, if i want to tear around a race track i will use my Honda S600, upgraded with a 1300cc motor 5 speed box konis and the list goes on (assuming i ever finish building it)
and if its water sports i guess my 32 foot sports cruiser will do

now for comuting to work and long inter state trips the x will do fine

I agree, and I have a 2003. it has been a great truck. 113K miles and counting. wife is driving it more these days for car-pool duty with our kids. I miss driving it, but then again I am daily driving a C6 corvette these days which is even more fun to drive. But I love driving the X whenever I get a chance to. It's just an excellent vehicle. I have owned 7 BMW's and it is way up there on the list, although pretty hard to compare it to a E36 M3 and E39 M5...

I think these X5's are very individual in terms of things failing on them. We have two X5's, a 2002 3.0 and a 2005 4.4; both sports. The 2002 has been relatively maintenance free. Just the routine stuff. The 2005 has had several major repairs on it just within 1 1/2 year of ownership. Yes, having to have the car repaired so many times tested my nerves but at the end of the day I love both my X's. To me, the E53 is a car with soul. It just puts a smile on my face. It isn't like other SUV's that are just a box on wheels. X5's and BMW somewhat in general are not cars for people who are bothered by having to have them repaired. When they are in perfect order is when they perform the best!

The 4.6is and 4.8is are special BMWs in my mind (I'm sure there are a good handful of others of course as well) and I too love driving it. I honestly think it all the time and hope I have it for many more years. Although I often tire of vehicles after a few years, it isn't happening with the X5.

Do you ever want to be rid of your X5?

Yes, it is the problem child of my stable; always having bizarre electrical or mechanical gremlins. Then I hook it up to my 4,000 pound travel trailer and load 4 bikes on the roof. It self levels and proceeds to own high altitude passes, motoring by gas pickups struggling with the same loads. Then it becomes my favorite again . . . .
