New Alternator for 1k?

Just got a quote from the dealer.... Wish I had the know how to attempt these things on my own....

They claim our X requires a 140 amp alternator AND aftermarket will cause complications.

Should I go somewhere else?

Is this the type of thing that it makes sense to have them do or should most reliable mechanics be able to handle it?

I appreciate any quick responses!

Thanks -

I think it's expensive for new alternator replacement. The alternator itself about $300 + Labor.

The price seems a little high. Is there another dealership near you? The alternator replacement is done often in our cars so they should be able to give you a quote fairly easily and quickly.

A bad alternator caused a bunch of false error codes in my x5. It made me think the engine, tranny, etc were failing but the alternator replacement just too care of it.

I thought it was high as well. Odd thing is she said our 04 x5 3.0 uses a 140 amp, not a 120?

Is that accurate or is she throwing in an upgraded version?

I had mine replaced at a dealer (under warranty) for $1,131. They have the alternator listed at $650 plus some sort of cover for an additional $81. The rest was labor.

I just received a quote from the other RI BMW dealer and it was 962.47 with everything, Inskip was 1200 with everything... how is this different?

Will inskip honor the other quote? Unfortunately, the car was towed to inskip this a.m.

Sounds like you may want to talk to them about matching the other quote. Too bad you already had your car towed to the more expensive place. It would probably cost more for towing it to the cheaper place than the savings would be worth.
